February 26 marks the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide and the occupation of the town of Khojaly by Armenian armed formations with the participation of the 366th motorized rifle regiment of Russia.

Thirty-four years have passed since the трагic events of the night of February 25-26, 1992, when Armenian armed units, reportedly supported by the 366th regiment, attacked the town. Around 2,500 residents who remained in the besieged city attempted to flee toward the Aghdam district. During this attempt to escape, civilians were subjected to mass violence.

According to Azerbaijani official data, 613 civilians were killed, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly people. A total of 1,275 civilians were taken hostage, with the fate of 150 still unknown. Another 475 residents were left disabled. Eight families were completely annihilated. Twenty-five children lost both parents, while 130 lost one parent.

In 1994, on the initiative of President Heydar Aliyev, the Milli Majlis adopted a resolution establishing February 26 as the Day of the Khojaly Genocide. The document outlined the causes of the tragedy and identified those considered responsible.

In Baku’s Khatai District, a memorial monument has been erected in honor of the victims.
