Can Changing Your Name Cancel a Bank Loan in Azerbaijan?

A debate has recently emerged in Azerbaijan over whether a person can avoid bank loans by changing their name or surname.

Some people believe that altering personal details might help borrowers evade banks and escape existing credit obligations. However, legal experts say this assumption is incorrect.

According to specialists, credit histories in Azerbaijan are not tied to a person’s name or surname, but to a unique FIN identification code listed on the national ID card.

Legal expert Akram Hasanov explained that even if a citizen officially changes their name or surname, their financial history remains linked to this permanent identifier.

“Every citizen has a unique FIN code. Even if the name or surname changes, the FIN code remains the same, and the credit history in the credit bureau is connected to that code,” he said.

The Azerbaijan Banks Association also states that changing personal details does not eliminate outstanding debts. Instead, banks simply update the customer’s information in their internal systems.

In such cases, financial institutions request updated documents from clients and revise the personal data in their databases while confirming that the borrower remains the same individual.

Experts note that name changes most often occur due to marriage or divorce, and only rarely at a person’s own request.

In any case, such changes do not affect existing financial obligations, and outstanding loan debts remain fully valid.
