Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Azerbaijan, according to recent statistics.
Official data show that 54,582 deaths were registered in the country between January and November 2025. The majority of these deaths were linked to illnesses, with heart disease and strokes accounting for about 42 percent of the total.
Despite advances in medicine and wider availability of treatment, the numbers remain high. Pharmacists say a significant share of prescriptions and pharmacy purchases are related to drugs used to treat cardiovascular conditions.
Doctors note that most patients requiring such medication are over the age of 40. However, specialists are increasingly concerned about another trend: heart-related illnesses are becoming more common among younger people.
Cardiologists report that cases of heart attacks and serious cardiovascular problems are now appearing more frequently among individuals aged 20 to 30.
Experts say the causes can vary. Some conditions are linked to congenital heart defects that may remain unnoticed for years before manifesting later in life. But doctors stress that lifestyle factors play a major role.
Unhealthy diets, harmful habits, low physical activity and sedentary office work are among the key drivers behind the growing number of cardiovascular problems.
Specialists say the risks affect both men and women equally. Compared with many European countries, where regular physical activity is more common, mass participation in sports and outdoor exercise remains less widespread in Azerbaijan.
Medical professionals emphasize that prevention remains the most effective strategy. Maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, spending time outdoors and undergoing regular medical check-ups can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.
