Drones Over Baku: What Happened in the Night Sky Above the Capital

Residents of several districts of Baku reported hearing the sound of drones in the sky late at night, prompting discussion and concern on social media.

According to eyewitnesses, the distinctive buzzing noise was heard in different parts of the capital, particularly around the settlements of Hovsan and Zabrat, as well as areas of the Nizami district.

Some residents said the sudden sound woke them up and caused alarm among family members.

“I was already lying down when I suddenly heard a loud buzzing from the direction of Zabrat, like something flying from the Koroglu area. We got scared. I personally wasn’t too frightened, but my daughter and daughter-in-law were very worried,” one resident said.

Others described the noise as similar to that of a typical unmanned aerial vehicle but said it was difficult to determine the direction of the flight.

Experts say such flights may be conducted to monitor airspace and ensure security over the capital.

They also note that increased surveillance activity is not unusual amid heightened regional tensions. According to analysts, countries often conduct test or monitoring flights to check drone routes, communication systems, and operational readiness.

“In many cases these are test flights. A drone can be launched from Baku and sent toward another direction, for example toward Ganja, in order to check systems and flight routes,” one specialist explained.

In response to inquiries, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense said there was no cause for concern.

The ministry noted that the drones observed in the sky belong to state structures and are used for monitoring and surveillance purposes in certain areas.

Officials emphasized that such flights are part of routine oversight activities and represent a normal security practice.

Authorities have asked residents not to panic if drones are seen or heard over the city.
