Russia has thanked Azerbaijan for its assistance in evacuating Russian citizens from Iran, highlighting Baku’s role as a key transit route amid rising regional tensions.
The issue was discussed during a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, where the two leaders reviewed developments surrounding Iran and the broader regional situation.
According to information released after the conversation, Putin expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for facilitating the evacuation of Russian nationals from Iran, as well as for helping transport Russian humanitarian cargo.
The call comes as the ongoing conflict involving Iran has drawn global attention and triggered a wave of diplomatic contacts among regional and international actors.
Analysts say Azerbaijan’s geographic position and transport infrastructure have made it an important logistical corridor for evacuations and humanitarian movements during the crisis.
Experts also note that Moscow is closely monitoring developments around Iran, which it views as a political partner in the region, and is actively engaging with regional leaders to assess potential implications of the conflict.
At the same time, diplomatic contacts among key regional players – including Russia, Türkiye and Azerbaijan – have intensified as governments attempt to manage the risks of wider instability.
Observers say Azerbaijan has sought to maintain a balanced approach, supporting humanitarian efforts while emphasizing stability and respect for territorial integrity in the region.
