As Azerbaijan prepares for the Novruz holiday, prices for nuts and dried fruits – staples of the traditional праздничная хонча – have climbed sharply, adding financial pressure to many households.
Market vendors say the most noticeable increase has been in hazelnuts. Kernels that previously sold for around 17 manats per kilogram are now being offered at 27–28 manats. Other popular items, including walnuts and chestnuts, have also become more expensive in the run-up to the holiday.
Consumers report adjusting their purchases. Instead of buying a full kilogram, many now opt for 200–300 grams – just enough to assemble a modest Novruz tray. According to buyers, preparing a single holiday хонча can now cost between 50 and 70 manats.
Regional markets show similar trends. Prices for in-shell hazelnuts and walnuts have risen noticeably compared to last year. очищенные walnut kernels in some areas are reportedly reaching 20 manats per kilogram.
Economists attribute the surge to several factors. Lower agricultural yields in 2025, rising logistics and import costs, and increased seasonal demand ahead of Novruz have all contributed to higher prices. External market dynamics, including inflationary pressures in neighboring countries, are also believed to be influencing supply costs.
While analysts suggest that part of the price increase may ease after the holiday season, structural factors such as production shortfalls and higher transportation expenses could keep prices elevated.
For many families, however, the immediate concern is practical: traditional holiday foods are becoming less affordable, turning a seasonal celebration into an economic balancing act.
