A retaining wall at a road tunnel in Baku has cracked after heavy rainfall, creating a potential safety risk in the city’s Bilajari settlement.

The incident was reported on Fizuli Street in Bilajari, part of Baku’s Binagadi district, where local residents say the concrete wall began to split after days of intense rain. The damage has raised concerns about a possible collapse, with both motorists and pedestrians affected.

Part of the road has already been placed under partial traffic restrictions as a precaution.

Residents in the area said the first visible signs of danger appeared after water began seeping through the structure during the recent rains. According to eyewitnesses, the crack then widened and the wall appeared to shift outward, increasing fears that part of the structure could give way.

People living nearby said they had repeatedly warned pedestrians not to walk along the sidewalk next to the wall because of the risk of collapse or falling debris and water.

Local officials said the damaged structure is a 5.6-meter-high concrete wall supporting the tunnel. The Binagadi district executive authority said the crack formed as a result of the recent rainfall and that relevant agencies would take the necessary measures.

The incident has added to broader concerns about the impact of heavy rains on infrastructure in and around Baku, where flooding and structural damage have been reported in several areas in recent days.
