Azerbaijani customs authorities say shipments containing weight-loss products, medicines and dietary supplements ordered from abroad are increasingly being detained after inspections revealed the presence of restricted substances.
The warning was issued by the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, which said many of the items are purchased online through foreign marketplaces and social media platforms.
According to the committee, products marketed as slimming teas, energy-boosting drinks and dietary supplements often contain substances whose circulation is restricted under Azerbaijani law. As a result, such shipments are frequently held at the border.
Officials also cautioned that individuals attempting to import these products could face legal consequences in addition to having the goods confiscated.
Restricted substances found in popular supplements
Customs officials say laboratory checks have identified substances such as Sibutramine, Pregabalin and Gabapentin in a number of imported products.
The number of detected cases has risen sharply in recent years. Authorities recorded 13 such incidents in 2023 and nine in 2024, but the figure jumped to 99 in 2025.
Officials say some buyers order the products unknowingly, while others attempt to import them for resale.
Doctors warn about health risks
Medical specialists caution that using medicines or supplements of unknown origin can pose serious health risks.
Some substances contained in such products may cause irregular heart rhythm, neurological stress, hormonal imbalance and metabolic disorders, doctors say.
Long-term use may also lead to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, digestive system problems and, in severe cases, liver or kidney failure.
Authorities urge consumers to check product contents
The State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan urged citizens to carefully examine product ingredients before ordering items from foreign online platforms.
Authorities say particular caution should be exercised with products advertised as “miracle” weight-loss remedies, energy boosters or treatments for various medical conditions.
Customs officials stressed that importing goods containing restricted substances without proper authorization may result in legal liability under Azerbaijani law.
