Ride-hailing users in Baku are increasingly facing canceled trips, even as many taxi drivers complain about declining demand and worsening working conditions.
Drivers say one of the main reasons for cancellations is the economic imbalance of certain rides. Long pickup distances combined with relatively low fares can make trips financially unviable, prompting drivers to reject or cancel requests.
Operational risks also play a role. Passengers sometimes wait in restricted stopping zones, including bus lanes or other regulated areas, where picking up a rider may lead to fines. In such cases, drivers either ask passengers to move or cancel the trip altogether.
Transport analysts describe the situation as a systemic conflict between platforms, drivers, and customers. Contributing factors include:
-
fare structures that drivers view as unsustainable;
-
physical fatigue linked to long working hours;
-
weak regulatory and oversight mechanisms;
-
limited coordination between ride-hailing companies and drivers.
Without policy adjustments or clearer market regulation, experts warn that tensions in Baku’s taxi sector could intensify, leading to more disputes and service disruptions.
