Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has warned citizens about a rise in cyber fraud cases, urging the public to exercise caution when receiving calls or messages from unknown numbers.
In its statement, the MIA stressed that even brief inattention can result in financial losses and the theft of personal data.
According to the ministry, one of the most common schemes involves individuals posing as bank employees. Fraudsters typically request bank card details, PIN codes, and other confidential information. Promises of quick and high returns on investments within a short period are also cited as clear warning signs of fraud.
Authorities emphasize that bank card information – including PIN codes and other sensitive data – must never be shared with third parties under any circumstances. No legitimate bank or financial institution requests such details over the phone or via messaging apps.
Special attention is advised regarding calls received through WhatsApp. If someone claiming to be a bank representative contacts you through the app and asks for card information, the ministry warns that it is a scam.
Citizens are also urged not to click on unknown links sent via social media or messaging platforms, as these may be used to access personal and financial data. In cases where callers present themselves as “technical support,” individuals should verify the legitimacy of the organization before sharing any information.
The MIA reminds the public that vigilance remains the most effective defense against cybercrime.
