Sabah Reach UEFA Champions League Main Stage for First Time

Azerbaijani champions Sabah have advanced to the main stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.

AZE.US reports, citing Report, that Sabah defeated Israel’s Hapoel Be’er Sheva 5-2 after extra time in the second leg of their playoff tie at Baku’s Tofig Bahramov Republican Stadium.

The visitors took the lead through Igor Zlatanović in the 10th minute. Christian Nwachukwu equalized for Sabah in the 38th before Guy Mizrahi restored Hapoel’s advantage in the 61st.

Umarali Rahmonaliyev made it 2-2 in the 74th minute, while Tellur Mutallimov scored a dramatic goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time to send the match into extra time.

Hapoel had won the first leg in Romania 2-1, leaving the aggregate score level at 4-4 after 90 minutes in Baku.

Sabah then took control in extra time. Patrick Orphe Mbina scored in the 101st minute, and Joy-Lance Mickels added another in the 115th.

Sabah won the return leg 5-2 and completed a 6-4 aggregate victory, securing a historic place in the Champions League’s main stage.
