Azerbaijan has called on Russian authorities to launch a full investigation into a provocation outside the guesthouse of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Moscow.

Unidentified individuals placed images described by Baku as anti-Azerbaijani and provocative outside the building on Aug. 27, AZE.US reports, citing a Foreign Ministry statement.

The ministry strongly condemned the incident and said it could have been intended to artificially escalate tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia.

Baku also said it could not rule out a connection between the provocation and what it described as a hostile and biased campaign against Azerbaijan by several Russian media outlets.

The Foreign Ministry urged the relevant Russian authorities to give the incident an appropriate legal assessment, identify those responsible and take measures to prevent similar actions.

Azerbaijan also reminded Moscow of its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The ministry said Russia must ensure the security of the Azerbaijani Embassy and its staff and prevent actions that could interfere with the diplomatic mission’s normal work.

No individuals or organizations were publicly accused of responsibility in the Azerbaijani statement.

The incident comes amid an increasingly tense political and media environment between Baku and Moscow. Azerbaijan is now awaiting a formal investigation by the Russian authorities.
