A new shipment of 989 tons of diesel fuel is scheduled to move from Azerbaijan toward Armenia on September 3, further expanding the transport and trade links developing between Baku and Yerevan.
The shipment consists of 17 railway tank cars departing from the Bilajari station of Azerbaijan Railways in the direction of Boyuk Kasik, according to Azerbaijani reports.
Azerbaijani media have described the shipment as another fuel export to Armenia. A separate report by Trend, citing Azerbaijan Railways, described the cargo as Russian diesel transiting Azerbaijan.
The commercial origin of the fuel was therefore presented differently in public reports, but the route itself confirms Azerbaijan’s growing role as a transit channel for Armenian-bound goods.
Before this shipment, approximately 15,000 tons of diesel fuel and nearly 5,000 tons of AI-92 and AI-95 gasoline had reportedly been exported to Armenia.
Once the new shipment is included, the total volume of fuel delivered or routed toward the Armenian market will approach 21,000 tons.
Other goods are also moving from Russia to Armenia through Azerbaijan. These include more than 55,000 tons of grain, nearly 9,000 tons of fertilizer, 1,414 tons of propane, 1,114 tons of coal, 334 tons of timber and 133 tons of aluminum.
The combined volume of these transit shipments exceeds 67,000 tons.
The deliveries are taking place before the full normalization of relations and before direct transport links between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been restored. They therefore represent more than isolated commercial transactions.
For Baku, the process demonstrates the practical value of Azerbaijan’s railway network and its position between Russia and Armenia. For Yerevan, the shipments provide access to essential fuel and other goods through a route that was previously closed by political and military tensions.
The gradual expansion of trade and transit may become one of the most important confidence-building elements in the broader Azerbaijan – Armenia peace process.
