Some acts cannot be excused by youth, carelessness or a desire to leave one’s mark. Spray-painting names on the rocks of Shusha is one of them.
Shusha is not an ordinary tourist destination. Azerbaijani soldiers shed their blood to raise the national flag over this city again. Many became martyrs. Thousands returned from the war as veterans and ghazis, some carrying life-changing wounds.
How, after such sacrifice, can anyone raise a spray can to deface Shusha’s ancient rocks?
Those who paint their names there do not immortalize themselves. They demonstrate disrespect for the city, its history and the men who gave their lives so that Azerbaijanis could return.
Love for Shusha is not expressed through graffiti. It is shown through reverence for the fallen, care for every stone and an understanding of the enormous price paid for the city’s liberation.
The inscriptions should be removed immediately without damaging the natural landscape, and those responsible must be held accountable.
But punishment alone is not enough. Society must recognize that Shusha belongs neither to one individual nor to one generation. It is a national treasure that must be preserved for those who come after us.
The blood of Azerbaijan’s martyrs gave us the right to return to Shusha. It gave no one the right to vandalize it.
