A holiday bonfire exploded in the Azerbaijani city of Sumgayit late on March 21, injuring 11 people, nine of them children, according to updated information from local media and health authorities. Authorities later identified the injured as Sumgayit residents born between 2004 and 2018.

The incident took place at the intersection of the city’s 7th, 8th and 12th microdistricts during Novruz celebrations. Initial reports said 10 people had been injured, including eight children, but that figure was later revised upward to 11.

Authorities said the blast occurred when people tried to light the bonfire with gasoline, triggering a sudden explosion. Emergency crews, including fire service units and three ambulance teams, were dispatched to the scene.

According to the updated medical statement, all of the injured suffered smoke inhalation. Seven people were treated and released for outpatient care, while four remained hospitalized in stable condition as of late Saturday.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations said safety measures were taken at the site to prevent the fire from spreading, while the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
