Iran Strike Risk Seen as Low but Not Impossible

Azerbaijan seeks neutrality as regional tensions raise concerns over spillover threats and potential refugee flows.

The possibility of Iranian missiles reaching Azerbaijani territory in the event of a broader regional conflict cannot be fully ruled out, political analyst Azad Isazade said in an interview with Musavat TV, while stressing that such a scenario remains undesirable for all sides.

Isazade noted that any escalation involving Iran would carry complex humanitarian and security implications for Azerbaijan. Millions of ethnic Azerbaijanis live in Iran, meaning military action could directly affect populations with deep social and family ties across the border.

He also warned that a large-scale destabilization inside Iran could trigger significant refugee movements toward neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan and Armenia. A sudden influx of displaced people would place pressure on infrastructure, public services and national security systems across the South Caucasus.

At the same time, the analyst emphasized that Azerbaijan’s official stance remains neutral and focused on regional stability. Baku has little interest in a widening confrontation that could undermine fragile normalization processes and emerging security balances in the region.

Even an unintended escalation, he said, could rapidly disrupt the current trajectory toward de-escalation in the South Caucasus, underscoring the importance of preventing a broader conflict.
