Heavy Rain Washes Out 300 Meters of Road in Zagatala

BAKU, Azerbaijan - Heavy rain washed out more than 300 meters (984 feet) of road leading to Mishlesh in Azerbaijan’s Zagatala district, making access difficult for the 40 families who live there.

Intense rain on October 1 and 2 caused water levels to rise sharply in the district’s mountain rivers, according to Vesti Baku and reporting by APA’s northwestern bureau.

The Mukhakh, Tala, Bakmaz and Michgar rivers all rose. Near Mishlesh, in the Yukhari Tala administrative area, the Tala River changed course and flowed toward its left bank, washing away more than 300 meters of the village road.

Water Line, Bridge and Culvert Damaged

The floodwater also stripped soil from more than 300 meters of a pipeline supplying drinking water to the villages of Yukhari Tala and Ashaghi Tala.

Rising water in the Bakmaz and Michgar rivers left a bridge and a culvert on the road to the high-mountain village of Akhakhdera in dangerous condition. Travel in that direction was also disrupted.

The Zagatala district emergency commission inspected the affected areas and instructed the relevant agencies to address the damage.

Heavy equipment has been working since the evening of October 2 to regulate channels and reinforce banks along dangerous sections of the four rivers. No injuries were reported.
