Georgia has secured 20-year guarantees on the volume and price of Azerbaijani gas under a new long-term contract due to begin Dec. 16, 2026.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at a government meeting that the agreement with Azerbaijan is strategically important for the country, according to Vesti Baku. He said it provides guarantees on both supply volumes and a favorable price for the next two decades.

Contract Is Designed to Run Through 2046

The intergovernmental agreement calls for a new gas purchase contract between SOCAR and the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation. Deliveries are scheduled to begin Dec. 16, immediately after the current arrangement serving Georgia’s social sector expires.

The base term is 20 years. The intergovernmental agreement remains in force at least until Dec. 16, 2046, or until all obligations are completed if that occurs later.

The parties also provided for a 10-year extension of an additional supply mechanism starting Jan. 1, 2027. The guaranteed volumes and pricing formula were not disclosed in the public text.

Part of a Broader Baku-Tbilisi Energy Package

Kobakhidze linked the gas contract to a broader energy cooperation package. It includes direct imports of Azerbaijani electricity without an intermediary, as well as agreements on the joint operation of the Baku-Tbilisi-Supsa oil pipeline and the Supsa terminal.

The gas supply agreement was signed in Baku on May 18, 2026. The new statement clarifies its practical effect: Georgia receives long-term predictability on price and available volumes, while Azerbaijan reinforces its role as the neighboring country’s principal energy supplier and strategic partner.
