Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has sent a letter to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan marking Türkiye’s Democracy and National Unity Day, observed on July 15.
In the message, Aliyev honored those killed while resisting the attempted coup in 2016 and expressed condolences to their families and the Turkish people.
“Ten years ago, brotherly Türkiye wrote one of the most tragic, yet at the same time one of the most honorable, pages in its modern history,” Aliyev said.
He said the attempted coup, which targeted Türkiye’s statehood, constitutional order, national will and democratic foundations, was defeated through the determination, resilience and patriotism of the Turkish people.
Aliyev noted that thousands of citizens took to the streets to defend their country, flag and national values, describing their actions as an enduring example of heroism.
The Azerbaijani president also highlighted Erdogan’s role during the crisis.
“Your decisive and farsighted leadership, the unity of your people around you and their immediate response to your call were among the main factors that saved your country from a major tragedy that night,” he said.
Aliyev said the events of July 15 demonstrated that no destructive force could prevail against unity between the state and the people.
He added that Democracy and National Unity Day had become a symbol of Türkiye’s national solidarity, commitment to statehood and determination to defend its freedom.
“The people and state of Azerbaijan, guided by the cherished principle of ‘One Nation, Two States,’ once again demonstrated solidarity with brotherly Türkiye and stood by its side at those decisive moments,” Aliyev said.
He expressed confidence that Azerbaijan-Türkiye friendship and brotherhood would continue to strengthen and that the two countries’ strategic alliance would develop further through joint efforts.
Aliyev concluded by wishing Erdogan good health and success, and peace, prosperity and well-being for Türkiye.
