Armenia’s second president, Robert Kocharyan, has been brought before the Anti-Corruption Court, which is expected to consider a request to place him in pretrial detention.
Kocharyan was previously detained and taken to the Anti-Corruption Committee, AZE.US. An ambulance was called after he became unwell and was found to have high blood pressure.
He was transferred to a medical facility for additional examination before being taken to court.
Armenia’s Prosecutor General has launched criminal proceedings against Kocharyan on allegations of abuse of official authority, accepting a particularly large bribe and money laundering.
The charges remain allegations, and Kocharyan has not been convicted.
His eldest son, Sedrak Kocharyan, has already been ordered held for two months. Former President Serzh Sargsyan has also been charged in the same broader criminal investigation and barred from leaving Armenia.
The case comes amid rising political tensions and legal action against several prominent opposition figures. A decision to detain Kocharyan could further intensify the confrontation between Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government and its political opponents.
