A sticker identifying an “inexperienced driver” has begun attracting attention on vehicles in Azerbaijan, prompting debate over who should use it and whether it is mandatory.
Transport expert Eldaniz Jafarov said the sign is recognized under Azerbaijan’s road traffic legislation and is also used in other countries.
According to Jafarov, displaying the sticker is currently recommended rather than compulsory. New drivers are encouraged to place it on the rear window of their vehicles to alert other road users that the person behind the wheel has limited driving experience.
“The purpose is to inform other road users that an inexperienced driver is behind the wheel, allowing them to be more cautious and give that driver additional room to maneuver,” Jafarov said.
In Azerbaijan, motorists with no more than two years of driving experience are considered inexperienced drivers.
Jafarov said authorities could consider making the sticker mandatory in the future, arguing that inexperienced motorists are frequently involved in road accidents, particularly on highways, intercity roads and during adverse weather conditions.
He stressed that drivers should not feel embarrassed about displaying the sign. The sticker could encourage other motorists to maintain a safer distance and exercise greater caution around newly licensed drivers.
For now, however, the “inexperienced driver” sticker remains advisory and is not mandatory for new motorists in Azerbaijan.
