Baku has begun restructuring a district heating system serving about 20,000 apartments, replacing energy from a combined heat and power plant that is preparing to cease operations with modern neighborhood boiler houses.
The project covers Yeni Ahmadli in the capital’s Khatai district, where the existing network heats more than 200 apartment buildings, 18 educational institutions, six medical facilities and 65 other social sites, according to Vesti Baku.
Projects Prepared for 16 Facilities
Heat from the Baku combined heat and power plant currently travels through a main line to 15 heating substations and one booster pumping station before being distributed through neighborhood networks.
After Azerenerji decided to close the plant, plans were prepared to build or reconstruct 16 facilities. The existing heating substations and pumping station are to be converted into boiler houses, while the local distribution networks will also be upgraded.
First Phase Covers 46 Buildings
Under the 2026 investment program, work has begun to modernize two heating substations on Ganja Avenue in the Khatai district. Boiler House No. 129 in the Yasamal district is also being reconstructed.
The facilities will have a combined capacity of 18 gigacalories per hour and are expected to provide reliable heating to 46 residential buildings, three kindergartens, two medical institutions and more than 20 other sites.
The current work is scheduled to be completed before the start of the next heating season.
Five boiler houses in Baku were fully modernized in 2024 and seven more in 2025. Together, they supply heat to 106 residential buildings and 16 education and health institutions, according to Azeristiliktejizat data published by Report.
