Azerbaijan is already supplying petroleum products to Armenia and facilitating the transit of third-country cargo, President Ilham Aliyev said at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting in Bishkek.
Baku and Yerevan are also working to increase bilateral trade, broaden the range of traded goods and establish new overland transport links, Aliyev said, according to Report.
“Together with Armenia, we are working to increase the volume of mutual trade, expand its range and create new land transport communications,” the Azerbaijani president said.
Aliyev said Azerbaijan and Armenia ended a conflict that had lasted for more than three decades when they initialed the text of a peace agreement a little over a year ago.
He described the development as a fundamental change for the South Caucasus, saying the region was transforming from a long-standing conflict zone into one of peace and cooperation.
Aliyev Criticizes UN Inaction
Aliyev also criticized the United Nations for failing to enforce four Security Council resolutions adopted in 1993.
The Azerbaijani leader said the resolutions were implemented only 30 years later and without a meaningful role by the UN.
“Azerbaijan fully restored its sovereignty and territorial integrity on its own,” Aliyev said.
He called for effective mechanisms that would ensure the prompt implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, arguing that such measures would strengthen the organization’s authority and its role in resolving international conflicts.
Aliyev said Azerbaijan, which until recently chaired the Non-Aligned Movement for four years, would continue contributing to multilateralism in international affairs.
Azerbaijan-Kyrgyzstan Relations Reach Alliance Level
At the beginning of his address, Aliyev thanked Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov for the invitation and hospitality.
He noted that Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan signed a Treaty on Allied Relations during his state visit a month earlier, describing the agreement as a historic document that elevated bilateral ties to their highest level.
Aliyev also congratulated Kyrgyzstan on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2027-2028.
Japarov praised Aliyev’s address, saying broad international dialogue was necessary to build a fair multipolar world.
