Azerbaijan’s tax authorities plan to use artificial intelligence to analyze cash register receipts for unusual turnover, goods that do not match a business’s activities and other signs of tax risk.
Samira Musayeva, deputy head of the State Tax Service, outlined the plans Oct. 20 at an event titled “Sustainable Business: Corporate Governance, Risk and Compliance,” according to Report.
Online cash registers transmit millions of receipts containing product names every day. Musayeva said the data could be used to assess whether sales correspond to a company’s activities and whether turnover shows unusual patterns.
The planned AI system would process cash register data and promptly send identified risks to the tax authorities. A similar approach could be used to analyze product descriptions in cargo customs declarations and electronic invoices, where taxpayers sometimes describe the same goods or services differently.
Musayeva also said automation of inventory results during tax audits, introduced in 2025, had already saved seven to nine weeks of audit time.
No launch date was announced for the AI-based receipt analysis. The proposal concerns identifying risks for further review, not automatically imposing fines.
