Azerbaijan has 2,389 mosques, of which 1,900 are in regular operation, according to newly released government figures.
The data was provided by the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations in response to a request from Report.
The country also has 874 shrines and pilgrimage sites, 16 churches, seven synagogues and 23 Christian houses of worship.
One place of worship is operated by the Baha’i community, while another serves followers of Krishna.
The figures indicate that approximately 80% of Azerbaijan’s mosques operate on a permanent basis. The published information did not explain the status of the remaining sites.
The numbers describe religious infrastructure and should not be interpreted as a breakdown of Azerbaijan’s population by faith.
Azerbaijan is constitutionally secular, while Islam is the religion followed by most of the population. Christian, Jewish and other religious communities also have long-established institutions in the country.
