Renewables Supply 20% of Azerbaijan’s Electricity, Saving 840 Million Cubic Meters of Gas

Must read

Renewable sources supplied 20% of the electricity generated in Azerbaijan in January–September 2026, saving an estimated 840 million cubic meters of natural gas, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said.

The figures appeared in an article by the minister published Oct. 20 in the Azerbaijan newspaper. Report also carried the main figures.

Azerbaijan generated 21.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first nine months of the year. Renewables accounted for 13.4% of generation in full-year 2025. The figures cover periods of different lengths and are not a comparison of the first nine months of two consecutive years.

The renewable generation total includes hydropower, not just solar and wind. Renewables currently account for about 21.5% of the country’s installed generating capacity, a separate measure from their share of electricity actually produced.

New Plants and Capacity Targets

The 445-megawatt Bilasuvar solar plant and the 25-megawatt Shams-1 plant are scheduled to enter service by the end of 2026. Azerbaijan aims to raise renewables’ share of installed capacity to 33.3% by 2027. That is a target, not the current share.

Planned investment in renewable energy and electricity networks by 2027 totals about $2.6 billion, including $600 million for grid infrastructure.

The estimated gas savings should not automatically be counted as additional exports: the minister’s article does not say that the entire volume was sold abroad.
