A new Baku Metro station under construction in the capital’s Nasimi district will be named “September 20,” Azerbaijan’s Cabinet of Ministers has announced.

The station is located at 194 Jalil Mammadguluzade Street. Prime Minister Ali Asadov signed the corresponding government decision.

The name was selected at the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev to commemorate September 20, 2023, the date Azerbaijan officially associates with the restoration of state sovereignty across the country.

The Baku City Executive Authority and Baku Metro CJSC have been instructed to address the organizational issues arising from the decision, including the formal use of the new station’s name.

The government resolution did not specify when the station would open to passengers.

The station forms part of Baku’s continuing metro expansion program, which is intended to improve public transportation and reduce pressure on the capital’s heavily congested road network.
