Azerbaijan’s Air Force has begun actively operating its new JF-17C Block III multirole fighter jets, which are now being used in training flights and exercises aimed at strengthening the country’s air defense capabilities.
Before each flight, teams of engineers inspect the aircraft, test their weapons systems, electronic equipment and onboard systems. Only after the technical checks are completed do the pilots enter the cockpit and begin their missions.
The JF-17C Block III is a single-seat multirole combat aircraft capable of carrying out both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. It can intercept hostile aircraft, strike ground targets and support military operations in different conditions.
One of the aircraft’s main advantages is its modern radar and electronic equipment. The fighter is equipped with an active electronically scanned array radar, a digital cockpit and advanced weapons control systems.
Its targeting pods allow pilots to detect, identify and track targets from greater distances, including beyond visual range. This gives the aircraft the ability to respond faster and engage threats before they come close to Azerbaijani airspace.
Military specialists say the Block III version is significantly more advanced than earlier JF-17 models. Its radar and weapons systems also offer capabilities that exceed those of the Soviet-designed MiG-29 aircraft that have long formed part of Azerbaijan’s fighter fleet.
The JF-17C Block III is often compared with modern versions of the F-16, although the two aircraft are not identical. For Azerbaijan, the main value of the JF-17 lies in its combination of modern technology, long-range combat capability, operational flexibility and relatively affordable maintenance costs.
The aircraft can conduct individual and group missions, operate in different weather conditions and take part in international military exercises. Its introduction gives Azerbaijan greater capacity to monitor its airspace, intercept aerial targets and conduct precision strikes.
The new fighters also help Azerbaijan gradually reduce its dependence on Soviet-era military aircraft. Along with the jets, the country is gaining access to new pilot training programs, maintenance standards and Pakistani and Chinese defense technologies.
Azerbaijan’s decision to purchase the JF-17 is therefore not only a military choice. It also reflects the country’s strategic partnership with Pakistan and its expanding defense cooperation with both Islamabad and Beijing.
The arrival of the JF-17C Block III marks an important step in the modernization of Azerbaijan’s Air Force. The aircraft provide the country with stronger radar coverage, more advanced weapons systems and a greater ability to confront threats from long distances.
