BAKU, Azerbaijan — The Otman-Bozdag mud volcano near the boundary of the Garadagh and Gobustan districts erupted for about 10 minutes on Sept. 26, according to Azerbaijan’s Republican Seismic Survey Center.
The eruption began at 7:32 a.m. local time and was recorded by eight digital seismic stations. It was accompanied by intense flames and a column of fire, Vesti Baku reported, citing the center.
The center said the source was at a depth of about 4 kilometers, or 2.5 miles. The energy released was preliminarily estimated at 6.5 million joules.
Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said specialists were conducting an initial observation of the volcano’s activity and assessing geological changes following the eruption.
Officials had reported no injuries or damage as of publication.
