BAKU, Azerbaijan - Azerbaijan’s ruling New Azerbaijan Party, or YAP, expelled former presidential administration chief Ramiz Mehdiyev from its ranks on Oct. 16 and proposed that he be stripped of his awards.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the party’s Executive Board, APA reported.

Mehdiyev was also left out of the newly formed membership of YAP’s Veterans Council.

The Executive Board meeting was the first held after the party’s eighth congress. The board adopted a separate decision terminating Mehdiyev’s party membership and issued a proposal concerning his awards.

The two actions have different legal status: Mehdiyev’s expulsion from YAP has taken effect, while removing his awards remains a party initiative. The announcement did not report a final decision by the authority empowered to revoke state awards.
