Fourteen Sumgait Students Hospitalized After Suspected Food Poisoning

SUMGAIT, Azerbaijan - Fourteen students from School No. 36 in Sumgait were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning on Oct. 2, and doctors described their condition as stable.

The patients - 11 boys and three girls - were admitted to the infectious diseases department of the Sumgait Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital, according to Vesti Baku.

Medical staff provided treatment, and the children remained under observation.

Expired Sweets Investigated

The Food Safety Agency said preliminary information indicated the students may have eaten expired confectionery brought from home by one pupil and shared with classmates.

The children began feeling ill during lessons at about 10:20 a.m. School officials sent them to a medical facility, and relevant agencies began an investigation.

The Food Safety Agency said it had taken the case under supervision. Officials said the final cause would be announced after the investigation was completed.
