SUMGAIT, Azerbaijan - The number of students hospitalized after a suspected food poisoning incident at School No. 36 in Sumgait rose from 14 to 21, according to updated information released on Oct. 2.
TƏBİB, Azerbaijan’s public health management agency, said 17 boys and four girls were admitted to the infectious diseases department of the Sumgait Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital, according to Vesti Baku.
The children received medical care and were reported in stable condition.
Authorities Investigate Expired Confectionery
The Food Safety Agency said preliminary information suggested the illness may have been linked to expired confectionery brought to the school by a student.
The investigation remains underway. Authorities said additional details would be released after the required checks were completed.
This report is a new update to the earlier announcement that 14 students had been hospitalized.
