YEREVAN, Armenia - An Armenian court has ordered Azerbaijani serviceman Nasimi Musayev held in pretrial detention for two months after he was detained on Armenian territory, authorities said.
Musayev had been reported missing from his unit in the Lachin direction before Armenian authorities announced his detention. Armenia’s Investigative Committee confirmed the court order.
Armenian investigators allege that Musayev illegally crossed the border while carrying a firearm and entered a home in the village of Shaki in Armenia’s Syunik region, where a woman was seriously injured. The accusations are allegations and have not been tested in court.
Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office said Musayev had been absent from his military unit since Sept. 26 and that the Military Prosecutor’s Office opened a case over suspected unauthorized absence.
Baku later confirmed that Musayev was in Armenia and said contacts had begun to clarify the circumstances of the incident and his legal status.
The two-month detention order is a new judicial development following the initial reports of Musayev’s disappearance and detention.
