Aliyev Gives Baku Metro Authority Over Passenger Cableways

Must read

BAKU, Azerbaijan - President Ilham Aliyev has expanded Baku Metro’s responsibilities to include the construction and operation of passenger cableways, as well as oversight of their service quality and safety.

The change was made through an amendment to Aliyev’s May 7, 2026, decree No. 662 on the reorganization of Baku Metro. The amendment adds passenger cableways to the transport services and infrastructure managed by the state-owned company.

Under the revised decree, Baku Metro will be authorized to organize passenger transport by cableway, design and build related infrastructure, operate the systems and work to improve their safety and service quality.

The May reorganization brought several parts of Baku’s public transport network under a more integrated structure, including the metro, BakuBus operations, the city’s planned tram system and the Baku Taxi Service. The latest decision adds cable transport to that framework.

The decree does not identify proposed cableway routes or announce construction schedules, budgets or financing arrangements.
