BAKU, Azerbaijan - Azerbaijani police seized 68 kilograms (150 pounds) of drugs and 1,600 drug-containing tablets in operations in Baku and Ganja, the Interior Ministry said on October 3.
Officers from the Main Directorate for Combating Drugs detained seven Azerbaijani citizens and an Iranian citizen identified as S. Esmaeilnaseb, according to Vesti Baku and Report.az.
Investigators Allege Smuggling Network
Investigators believe the eight suspects acted on instructions from drug traffickers based abroad. The ministry said the drugs had been smuggled into Azerbaijan for illegal distribution.
The ministry’s initial statement did not identify the specific types of drugs, say how the seized material was divided among the suspects or disclose the alleged smuggling route.
Criminal cases have been opened. A court ordered all eight suspects held in pretrial detention while the investigation continues.
