BAKU, Azerbaijan - Construction of three small hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 10.7 megawatts is nearing completion in Azerbaijan’s Lachin district. Once commissioned, the number of operating plants in the district will rise to 14 and total installed capacity to 83.3 MW.

Azerenerji is building the 4.59-MW Seyidlar, 3.16-MW Bulovlu and 2.93-MW Goshasu plants on the Shelve River, according to APA.

A total of 14.5 kilometers of diversion pipelines has been installed to carry water to the facilities across difficult mountain terrain. Turbines and generators are now being installed, with completion planned in the coming months.

Generation Already Exceeds Local Demand

Eleven hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 72.6 MW have been commissioned in Lachin over the past six years. The district’s current electricity demand is estimated at 8 to 10 MW and is fully covered by hydropower.

Surplus electricity is supplied to Azerbaijan’s unified power grid. The three new facilities will increase the capacity of the Lachin cascade by about 14.7%.
