BAKU, Azerbaijan - A cargo airport in the Alat Free Economic Zone is expected to be ready for operation by late March or early April 2027, with an initial annual capacity of 500,000 tons that is planned to increase to at least 2 million tons.
Valeh Alasgarov, chairman of the zone’s board, announced the timetable at a German-Azerbaijani conference on strategic partnership and connectivity, according to APA.
A total of 750 hectares has been allocated for the airport and surrounding logistics infrastructure. Construction began in April 2024 and is expected to be completed before the end of 2026.
Plan for a Cargo Hub
The project is being developed under an agreement with Silk Way Airlines. The airport is intended to serve businesses in the free economic zone and cargo flows moving through Alat.
The planned expansion from 500,000 tons to 2 million tons would require at least a fourfold increase in cargo handling. Officials have not yet announced a timetable for reaching the maximum capacity.
