KRAMATORSK, Ukraine - At least 33 people were killed and 18 wounded in a Russian bomb strike on a street in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk where two city buses were operating, Ukrainian authorities said Oct. 8.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the location as a bus stop. Police images showed debris across the roadway and the burned shell of a bus, according to Reuters.

Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin said civilians had been targeted. Moscow had not commented on the strike at the time of publication. Russia has repeatedly denied intentionally attacking civilians during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Public Transport Suspended

Authorities suspended public transportation in Kramatorsk and neighboring Sloviansk, citing the deteriorating security situation and the danger to passengers and drivers.

Kramatorsk is one of the principal Ukrainian-held cities in the northern part of the Donetsk region. Local officials say Russian forces have intensified drone and guided-bomb attacks on the city and other parts of Ukraine’s defensive line in recent months.

The Kramatorsk attack came a day after a major Russian assault across Ukraine. The death toll from a strike on an apartment building in Pryluky rose to 22, including five children. Kyiv authorities separately reported deaths and injuries in drone attacks on the capital on Oct. 8.
