Iran has deployed more than 50 combat and support units along its borders, Army Ground Force commander Brig. Gen. Ali Jahanshahi said on Oct. 10.
The deployment stretches from Iran’s northwest through its western and southwestern frontiers, across the eastern and southeastern regions and along the Makran coast, according to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV.
Jahanshahi said the forces include mobile and rapid-response formations, armored and mechanized brigades, as well as artillery, engineering, missile and drone units. He said the units were sent to the border areas after the outbreak of the latest war.
Military Surveys Possible Entry Routes
The commander said the army had conducted reconnaissance across the country to identify locations that hostile forces could use to land aircraft or enter Iranian territory. The surveyed sites included disused airfields.
Military units were assigned in advance to cover those locations, he said. Tehran did not disclose the precise deployment sites, the number of personnel involved or the distribution of units on each border.
Northwestern Deployment Includes Azerbaijan Frontier
Iran’s northwestern frontier borders Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey. Jahanshahi did not identify a specific section of that frontier or accuse any neighboring country of posing an immediate threat.
The announcement comes amid continuing military tension around Iran and concern that large-scale operations could resume. The size and exact location of the deployment have not been independently verified.
