Twenty people, including three children, were killed in Russian strikes on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Saturday, Oct. 10, Ukrainian authorities said, raising the previously reported death toll from 15.

Eighteen people were wounded, according to updated figures reported by Reuters and The Associated Press. Ukrainian officials said five guided aerial bombs struck several parts of the city nearly simultaneously, and one of the attacks destroyed part of an apartment building.

Emergency crews continued searching through the rubble and pulling residents from the wreckage. Zaporizhzhia’s outskirts are less than 30 kilometers (about 20 miles) from the front line, and the city has faced increasingly frequent Russian bombardment in recent months.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said residential buildings were hit and renewed his call for Western partners to increase pressure on Moscow.

Air attacks also affected Kyiv on Saturday. Ukrainian officials reported seven people wounded in a strike on a restaurant, along with power outages and a temporary suspension of subway service.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had struck a data center in Kyiv and a cargo vessel that it alleged was carrying military supplies to Odesa. Those claims were not independently verified, and Moscow did not separately comment on the reported civilian deaths in Zaporizhzhia.

The new toll represents a significant update to the initial figures, which put the number of people killed at 15 and the number wounded at 16.
