A new road linking Lachin International Airport with Lachin city will pass through 12 tunnels and cross 15 viaducts, cutting the mountain route to about 38 kilometers.

Məsim Məmmədov, the Azerbaijani president’s special representative in the Lachin district, disclosed the project details on Oct. 14, according to Report.

The existing road from the airport at Gorchu to central Lachin is about 60 kilometers long and takes roughly 90 minutes to travel because it crosses difficult mountain terrain. The new alignment is designed to reduce both the distance and travel time.

Work Continues Across Difficult Terrain

Construction is proceeding in terrain where elevation differences between residential areas can reach 300 to 400 meters. The use of tunnels and viaducts is intended to produce a shorter and more direct connection between the airport and the city.

Məmmədov said about 70 kilometers of urban roads have already been built in Lachin. The first phase was completed before residents began returning to the city, and design work for the internal street network has been finished.

Second Phase Planned for 2027

The second phase of Lachin’s road modernization program is scheduled to begin in 2027. It will connect new residential areas to the existing road network.

Work to establish the city’s public transportation system is nearing completion, while construction of a bus terminal is also underway, APA reported.

A planned cable-car system remains part of the city’s transport program. Its foundation was laid in 2025, but officials have not announced opening dates for either the new highway or the cable-car line.
