The number of people killed or injured by landmines in Azerbaijan over the past three decades has surpassed 3,500, the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations said Wednesday.

More than 400 Azerbaijani citizens, including women and children, have been killed or wounded in mine incidents since 2020, Ambassador Tofiq Musayev said during the general debate of the First Committee at the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly.

“These figures underscore the urgent need for sustained international support for mine clearance and victim assistance, as well as for strengthening national mine-action capacities,” Musayev said, according to Report.az.

The latest figures show that the casualty toll has continued to rise. In April 2025, Azerbaijan’s mine-clearance agency reported more than 3,400 mine victims since 1991. At that time, authorities recorded 388 people killed or injured after the 2020 war, including 70 deaths and 318 injuries.

Landmines and other unexploded ordnance remain a major obstacle to reconstruction and the safe return of displaced residents. Azerbaijani officials have repeatedly called for increased international funding, technical assistance and stronger cooperation on humanitarian demining.

During the same U.N. address, Musayev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to its obligations on arms control, nonproliferation and disarmament. He also called for existing moratoriums on nuclear testing to remain in place until the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty enters into force.
