Aliyev Compares Separatist Leaders’ Trial to Nuremberg

President Ilham Aliyev compared the trial of Armenian separatist leaders in Azerbaijan to the Nuremberg Tribunal on Thursday and warned that peace with Armenia remains fragile.

Aliyev made the remarks on October 15 during an address to the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia in Baku, according to the presidential website.

He said leaders of the former separatist authorities had been brought before an Azerbaijani court and called the proceedings an analogue of the Nuremberg Tribunal “in both substance and form,” according to Report and APA.

The characterization reflected Aliyev’s assessment of the defendants and the proceedings. He also referred to past threats against Baku and said captured military equipment was displayed at the Military Trophy Park.

Peace With Armenia Remains Fragile

In another part of the address, Aliyev said Azerbaijan had offered peace after the fighting ended and had been living under peaceful conditions for a little over a year.

“This peace remains fragile and must be protected and strengthened,” he said, according to AZERTAC.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have not yet signed a final interstate peace treaty. Talks have also covered border delimitation, transport connections and other normalization issues.
