Lawyer Says Women In Azerbaijan Are Cheating More Often Than Men

Women in Azerbaijan are now cheating on their spouses more often than men, lawyer Ramil Suleymanov said during a televised discussion on rising divorce rates and the hidden causes behind family breakdowns.

He also stressed that there is no official statistic proving this, because adultery is often not cited openly in divorce proceedings.

Suleymanov said that while men were more often blamed for infidelity five or six years ago, female infidelity has now become more widespread, in his view. He described the trend as troubling and said such cases increasingly surface in divorce disputes, even when court filings formally list other reasons such as incompatibility.

According to him, adultery remains one of the most commonly hidden causes of divorce in Azerbaijan. He said clients often come to lawyers with messages, videos and other material they say proves a spouse was unfaithful, but many still avoid presenting infidelity as the formal reason for ending a marriage.

Suleymanov also pointed to possible legal consequences. He referred to a December 24, 2025 plenary decision by Azerbaijan’s Supreme Court, saying conduct that humiliates a spouse may be treated as a violation of personal rights. In his reading, that could allow claims for moral damages in cases involving infidelity, depending on the facts and evidence presented.
