Azerbaijan registered 11,422 marriages and 6,443 divorces in the first months of 2026, according to official statistics.
The figures were included in the State Statistics Committee’s report on the country’s economic and social development indicators for January-May.
According to the report, district and city registration departments of the Ministry of Justice officially recorded 11,422 marriages and 6,443 divorces during the reporting period.
This means the number of divorces was more than half the number of registered marriages.
However, this does not mean that the couples who married this year are the same couples who divorced. The figure only shows the ratio between newly registered marriages and divorces recorded during the same period.
Compared with the same period of 2025, the number of marriages per 1,000 people in Azerbaijan fell from 4.4 to 3.4.
At the same time, the number of divorces per 1,000 people also declined slightly, from 2.0 to 1.9.
In other words, both marriages and divorces decreased compared with the same period last year. Still, the gap between the two indicators remains a subject of public attention, especially as marriage activity continues to decline.
Experts have previously linked changes in family statistics to economic pressure, housing difficulties, the cost of starting a family, changing social expectations and rising conflicts within couples.
The latest data suggests that family trends in Azerbaijan are continuing to shift: people are marrying less often, while divorce remains a significant social factor.
