Another shipment of Russian grain is being sent to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory as regional freight links continue to expand.
The latest shipment consists of six railcars carrying 420 tons of wheat and four railcars carrying 280 tons of barley. The 700-ton consignment is departing from Bilajari station toward Boyuk Kasik on Azerbaijan’s border with Georgia.
The cargo will then continue to Armenia through Georgian territory. The shipment therefore does not represent the opening of a direct railway between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
However, figures released with the announcement show that transit through Azerbaijan has already moved beyond isolated or symbolic deliveries.
More than 54,000 tons of Russian grain have been transported to Armenia through Azerbaijan. The route has also handled nearly 9,000 tons of fertilizer, 1,414 tons of propane, 1,114 tons of coal, 334 tons of timber and 133 tons of aluminum.
Azerbaijan has separately begun supplying fuel to Armenia. Azerbaijani exports have so far included approximately 15,000 tons of diesel and nearly 5,000 tons of AI-92 and AI-95 gasoline.
The growing volumes indicate that practical commercial ties are developing even before the two countries establish diplomatic relations or fully open their shared border.
The shipments also demonstrate Azerbaijan’s potential role in Armenia’s future supply chains. A direct rail connection, if eventually restored under a broader peace settlement, could significantly shorten the route and expand regional trade.
