Passengers in Baku say taxi fares have risen sharply on some routes, particularly during rush hour.
One passenger said a ride that previously cost 5 manats now costs 10. Another reported seeing a fare of more than 7 manats for a short trip that used to cost 3-4 manats.
Some passengers have linked the increases to road closures during the Formula 1 Grand Prix. One said an app quoted 10-15 manats for a route that previously cost 2-3 manats. These are examples of fares shown at particular times, rather than a new fixed rate.
Drivers also point to traffic congestion. They say a short journey can take much longer than usual, increasing both the time spent on a booking and fuel consumption.
Bolt said fares vary according to the time of day, traffic, the number of requests in an area and the number of available drivers. A short ride through heavy traffic at peak time can therefore cost more than a longer journey on clear roads.
Yango cited similar factors, along with weather and the characteristics of the destination. The report said demand for taxis remained high despite the higher fares, with some passengers using them to avoid crowded buses and metro trains.
The price shown for the same route can change substantially depending on when a passenger books and what is happening on the roads.
