Azerbaijani actress Turkan Murad has responded to criticism after appearing in a controversial commercial that sparked a wider debate over cosmetic surgery, beauty standards and the treatment of women on social media.

Murad played a woman who had undergone multiple aesthetic procedures in the advertisement featuring popular Azerbaijani actor Taleh Yuzbeyov.

The commercial quickly went viral in Azerbaijan, drawing sharply divided reactions. Some viewers saw it as satire of excessive cosmetic surgery, while others accused it of humiliating women and reinforcing stereotypes about appearance.

Murad said critics should separate the actress from the character she portrayed.

“First of all, I want to thank everyone for the congratulations. To those criticizing me, I want to say that this was simply a character I played. Had I felt insecure about it, I would not have appeared in the commercial. Relax,” she said.

The controversy has grown beyond the advertisement itself, with social media users debating whether public criticism of cosmetic procedures amounts to legitimate social commentary or personal attacks on women’s appearance.

The dispute has also highlighted a familiar contradiction in online discussions: women who undergo cosmetic procedures are frequently mocked for changing their appearance, yet attempts to satirize that trend can trigger an equally intense backlash.
