The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has approved a $45 million loan for a Caspian Sea water desalination project in Azerbaijan.
The financing is intended for a project designed to create an additional source of water for the country, according to information released by the bank.
The decision represents loan approval. The timing of disbursement, the planned facility’s capacity and the construction schedule have not yet been disclosed.
Why the Desalination Project Matters
The proposed plant is part of a longer-term response to growing pressure on water supplies in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula.
President Ilham Aliyev described it in January as Azerbaijan’s first facility of its kind and said the Caspian Sea’s relatively low salinity makes desalination technology suitable for the project.
The new loan does not mean the plant is already operational. Further progress will depend on completing the financing arrangements and implementing the project.
