Armenian Parliament Committee to Review TRIPP Deal on Oct. 21

YEREVAN, Armenia, Oct. 19 - Armenia’s parliamentary foreign relations committee is scheduled to discuss ratification of a framework agreement with the United States on the TRIPP transport project on Oct. 21, with plenary consideration planned for Oct. 27.

Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan is expected to be the main presenter at the committee hearing, Report said, citing Armenian media. Its Russian-language report gives the same timetable.

The bill concerns ratification of the framework agreement on strategic cooperation between Armenia and the United States concerning the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP. Scheduling a hearing does not mean parliament has approved the agreement.

From Signing to Parliamentary Review

The agreement was signed remotely by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on June 1 and by Mirzoyan in Yerevan on June 4. Armenia’s Foreign Ministry said at the time that both countries would need to complete their required domestic procedures before it could enter into force.

The reported dates mark the next parliamentary steps. The committee’s decision and any subsequent vote are still ahead; the timetable does not establish a date for opening the route or starting construction.

For Azerbaijan, the project is intended to provide a transport link through Armenia between the country’s main territory and its Nakhchivan exclave. Progress toward ratification therefore also concerns preparations for reopening regional transport connections.
